An exhibit that features 18 local Holocaust survivors is now open at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County in Glen Cove. It’s called ‘Survivor’ and includes the photograph of Rachel Epstein, 92, of Roslyn.

Epstein and her brother were taken in by neighbors in France after her parents were sent to Auschwitz. She said so many things happened that she “shouldn’t be alive” and said she “somehow always escaped.”

Daniel Weiss is the project’s photographer. He said the concept was to celebrate the “amazing survivors.” He said they are “the heroes of their own stories.”

Project producer Dinah Kramer said it shows “the resiliency of the human spirit” and pointed out that the survivors are not portrayed as victims. Kramer’s mother, a Holocaust survivor, is included in the exhibit.

The Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County is open seven days a week. The exhibit runs through the end of July.
