A 58-year-old Glen Cove crossing guard was critically injured after being struck by a car while on the job Thursday, police say.
News 12 is told a driver of a white SUV was traveling southbound on Dosoris Lane when he struck Carlos Vasquez.
Vasquez has been employed through the Glen Cove City Police Department as a school crossing guard near K.A Deasy Elementary School since April 2021. Police say he was getting ready to walk a parent across the street when he was hit and suffered head injuries and had to be airlifted to the hospital.
People in the community are hope for the best for Vasquez.
"Every day we have a little chat - he's a wonderful man," says Angelina Scutifero. "I wish...I really wish him a speedy recovery."
Some neighbors say they would like to see speed bumps and more stop signs on Dosoris Lane because they see cars speeding in the school zone.
The driver of the SUV, an 82-year-old Bayville resident, remained at the scene. News 12 is told he had not been charged at this time.
Officers are investigating the cause of the crash.
