7ds agoOn this Road Trip: Close to Home, News 12's Macy Egeland took a step back in time onto the grounds of the Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium.
The property was home to William Vanderbilt II. It was build in 1910.
You can tour the entire house, getting a glimpse of how he and his family lived 100 years ago.
The eagles at the entrance used to sit outside of Grand Central Station, which was built by the Vanderbilts.
During his time at this summer home, Mr. Vanderbilt would travel the world and bring back artifacts and trophies, creating a unique collection you won't see anywhere else.
One of them is a 32-foot whale shark, the largest taxidermy fish in the world.
You'll also discover other wild animals and fish throughout the Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium, and the grounds are gorgeous.
Vanderbilt left the property in his will to Suffolk County. It became Suffolk County's first park in 1950.
The property is open year-round to explore.
