A homeless shelter steps from a day care in a West Babylon neighborhood is being forced to close its doors, according to the Town of Babylon.
Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer says the shelter’s operator, Family Service League, does not have a valid certificate of occupancy. The facility has been given an order to vacate within 45 days.
Neighbors say there has been drug use, and police have constantly been at the shelter for disturbances.
Both the shelter and the day care are on the grounds of Our Lady of Grace Church on Albin Avenue.
A spokesperson for Family Service League says the order from the town is under review and would not comment. Attempts to contact the Diocese of Rockville Centre were not answered.
Town of Babylon officials say they are working with Suffolk County to have the residents relocated.
